The Manhattan

Jump to recipe

If you’re looking for a cocktail that will make you feel like you slipped into a sultry New York bar, The Manhattan is just the thing.

I was gifted a bottle of rye whiskey that was far above my paygrade and decided to try out this classic cocktail. And let me tell you, having this cocktail in my hand made me want to throw on a power suit and open up a marketing firm in the 60s.

It only calls for three ingredients but tastes beautifully layered. It depends heavily on the quality of ingredients so best to use rye and sweet vermouth you enjoy.

The Whistle Pig 15 Year Rye is stupid good. It has a sweet caramel smell and tastes like spice and smoke. As to the vermouth, here’s everything I know: it’s a fortified wine, the sweet one is red, and Grassotti is my new go-to.

The Manhattan

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey – I used Whistle Pig 15 Year Estate Oak Aged Rye BUT since that’s a pricey bastard, I also use High West Double Rye and Whistle Pig Piggyback 100% Rye
  • 1 oz Grassotti Vermouth di Torino Rosso (a sweet vermouth)
  • 1-2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • Luxardo Cherry for garnish

Instructions:

  • Put a coupe glass in the freezer to chill it.
  • Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir with ice. Honestly, if you don’t have a mixing glass, just throw everything in a shaker; it’ll water it down a touch more but it’s not like you should wait until you buy a mixing glass to make it.
  • Strain into your chilled coupe and garnish with a Luxardo cherry.
