Druidcraft Whiskey Sour

Our Orothon (formerly Durandor) group is a bit of a unicorn in how often we usually meet. Some DnD groups meet once per month, some once in a blue moon. Orothon usually meets at least every other week. This is great because consistently meeting means the story maintains steam and we don’t forget everything about our characters.

But, much to my displeasure, summer has brought various vacations, kid commitments, and work conflicts so Orothon has been on a hiatus for the last few weeks. Ah the endless yokes of adulthood.

Fortunately, some of us who have less of said yokes were still available to get together for a game night. To get our fix we played Dominion and Here to Slay.

Dominion is a deck-building game where you must accrue the most land in order to win. It takes a couple of play-throughs to learn but it’s so worth it. I love Dominion and I fucking rocked it during the second game with 75 victory points (Sportsmanship compels me to also admit the first game was far less impressive and I finished last). For my fellow Dominion players out there, the first game we played was from Menagerie and the second game was from Seaside and Prosperity.

Here to Slay is a card game I got for my birthday this year. It’s adorable and sneaky fun. You win by either slaying three monsters or be the first to build a full party of adventurers. It’s more complicated to play than Exploding Kittens but less complicated than Dominion. We’ll play it again for sure and I highly recommend trying it out.

It was about 85 degrees outside so I wanted something light and fresh for the cocktail. Enter the Strawberry Basil Bourbon Smash. But…I forgot the strawberries so I had to change the plan.

Me texting my friend for a completely logical substitute to strawberries

I had lemons, basil, and simple (and my friend confirmed he had eggs) so I went with a Basil Whiskey Sour.

Is it particularly novel? No. Did it use the ingredients I already had and still taste amazing? Yep. It’s basically a standard Whiskey Sour with basil muddled in the lemon juice and garnished with basil leaves and edible flowers (which would’ve looked so beautiful with the pink color of the originally planned Strawberry Smash).

Also, I love basil. It smells so incredible and shines through in a killer way in cocktails. I use it in cocktails all the time. The edible flowers also added a nice, unexpected element. Though only purchased to dress up the glass, they added a soft, botanical smell that elevated the cocktail. And they did indeed look gorgeous.

Druidcraft Whiskey Sour

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 oz Eagle Rare Bourbon (or any type you prefer)
  • 1.5 oz Fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 oz Simple syrup
  • .5 – 1 Egg white
  • 1 dash of Angostura bitters
  • Fresh Basil leaves for muddling and garnishing
  • Edible flowers for garnish if you can find them (I found them at Whole Foods)

Instructions:

Muddle a few basil leaves with the lemon juice in your shaker. Add bourbon and simple. Dry shake for 30 seconds, shake with ice for 30 seconds. Strain into a coupe or low-ball glass (usually without ice but if you’re a slow drink you could throw a big cube in there). Garnish with a few drops of bitters, a Basil branch and those boujie little flowers. Slay your thirst.
